Chief of Department Kevin P. Mac Curtain
On September 5, 2006 Kevin P. Mac Curtain was appointed as Chief of the Boston Fire Department. The highest ranking uniform position in the department. In His role as Chief of Department he oversees the divisions of field services, and administrative services, which includes Fire Operations Divisions, as well as Safety, Training and Fire Prevention.

Chief Mac Curtain, a 35 year veteran, was appointed to the Boston Fire Department on July 27, 1972. As he rose thru the ranks, he worked on Engine and Ladder Companies in the Dorchester, Roxbury, and Jamica Plain sections of the city. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1978, to Captain in 1982, and to District Chief in 1986. In 1991 he was promoted to Deputy Chief and reassigned to Headquarters where he worked in various staff positions, including 2 years as the Emergency Management Director for the City of Boston and 7 years as the Chief of Operations. He then took a field Division position for 4 years before being appointed as Chief of Department.

Chief Mac Curtain's degree is in Fire Science. He spent 12 years as an instructor for the State Fire Academy, where he taught a variety of courses including fire ground operations, first line supervisor, incident command, and LP/LNG gas firefighting among others. For the past 6 years he has been a member of project responder a national committee that reports to the Terrorism Research Center on the needs, goals and priorities of the first responder community.

He and His wife Maureen have been married for 38 years and have raised 3 boys.
