Skills Requirments

What do you (or your department) do with firemen that are unable to complete/pass the drills/skills you teach?? Do you have a policy/program in place for firemen that fail to meet the standard your department requires (i.e.: FF I / II skills, EMS skills, Self rescue, FAST, Tactical Rescue, Vehicle rescue, etc...). Do you require your firefighters to maintain a certain skill set, and how to you assure that your firemen maintain the ability to perform these skills?

    We have a policy in place that covers you must keep and maintain your skill level to the minimum standard set by our Department. For example you are evaluated twice a year in the Combat challenge with a few more skills added to this (ie, rasing 24' ground ladder, cranking saws and cutting rebar) we do all this for a air consumption drill and to prove you can still perform some job skills. This is not to mention all of this is covered by our "Job Requirment policy" That policy lays out the minimum requirements you are to perform. One more thing it is the Officers responsibility to train the individual and if he/she is not able to get through we as training officers then step in for support to hopefully show a different view of delivering the skills needed to perform. Oh I have to brag some." EVERYONE " runs the Combat / air consumtion drill. YES from the CHIEF down.
