Let's talk Pumps!

Group to discuss problems with pumps or just to share information regarding pumps. Training of pump operators to deal with fire ground operations.

Fire Department Connections

We are looking at changing SOG for FDC connections. At what starting pressure does your engineers start with when addressing a connection?

It depends on whether you are supplying the sprinklers or a standpipe. For sprinklers, we use 150 PSI regardless. This is the state standard from the state fire marshal. For standpipes, our hose pack (150 ft X 1&3/4 inch with wye and solid bore nozzle) gets charged at 120 PSI + 25 for the standpipe + 5 PSI per fllor of elevation. In most cases we use 150 PSI then add 10 is needed.

My department usually deploys a hotel pack the consists of 150' of 1 3/4 with a standard fog nozzle. The hydraulics work out to 175 psi pump pressure and that does not include head pressure. All the engineer has to do is add 5 lbs. per floor to reach the proper pump pressure.
