Deputy Chief Hamilton

Profile Information

Lives in:
South Middleton Township, PA
Department:
Union Fire Company No.1
Title/rank:
Deputy Chief
Years of public service:
24
Agency structure:
Volunteer fire department
Top issues in your department:
Municipalities taking volunteer services for granted and not paying their fair share for our professional services using state of the art equipment.

Convincing our coffers that if we take more financial burden off of the volunteer so they can focus on training, recruitment and retention and not spending all the time fund raising will save them money in the long run. Maintaining the volunteer system vs paid is not something they can comprehend. Some areas near us are on board but not all.

Fire Taxes (in the right areas) will cause all residents to pay equally and fairly and ease the pain on municipal budgets, especially in todays economic downturn. I don't know of any resident that would complain about anywhere from 20 to 40 dollars a house hold a year for fire protection!
Professional Qualifications:
FFI
NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800
Numerous other training and seminar accomplishments
Topics you provide training for:
The biggest lately has been reading smoke. Along with continually reverting back to the basics. We need to be proficient at the easy stuff. Being in PA we are trying to implement an exercise program as the state leads the country in LODD deaths specific to medical problems and not so much trauma.
Bio:
Started the fire service at 12 as a junior to be with my Dad. Started with Union Fire Co. No.1 in Carlisle, PA and have been there ever since. After graduating to a senior member and completing necessary training requirements soon became a LT then worked my way up to Captain. After a few years with that stepped up into the Assistant Chief slot and have worked my way up to Deputy. I have been a Chief officer for about 10 years now. Along the way have served many committees within our company and still am active on a number of them.
