Fire Engineering/FDIC Contributor Bennie Crane Passes Away

Bennie Crane passed away on July 4, 2009, after a long illness. A popular speaker and certified facilitator, Crane began his fire service career with the Chicago (IL) Fire Department in 1961 and retired as district chief in 1995. He was a field instructor with the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute and Northwestern University. I recently had the opportunity to speak at the IAFC Metro fire chief’s conference, while there; I briefly asked Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran if he was being vetted currently for the job of director for the United States fire administration. One year ago, two highly regarded firefighters in a well managed and well respected organization lost their lives in a residential structure fire. Clarence Center Crash & Black Sunday News and NIOSH

Just a few short weeks after celebrating the miracle on the Hudson, America today is mourning the loss of 50 citizens who boarded a plane last night from New Jersey reroute to Buffalo New York. FDNY rescues 154 from air crash in the Hudson

A US Airways airliner reported to be an Airbus 380 today carrying the hundred and 148 passengers and six crew hit a flock of birds and apparently lost both engines according to early reports. The pilots were able to land the plane in the Hudson River. Eyewitness reports from New Yorkers sitting in office buildings along the Hudson described the plane slowly descending into the Hudson River. Capt. Gary Stephens firefighter dies in the line of duty Elizabeth New Jersey January 2, 2009

In the early-morning hours today January 2nd 2009 57-year-old Elizabeth (N.J.) Firefighter Gary Stephens was killed in the line of duty while backing up an apparatus which was laying a supply line at a working structure fire. Capt. Gary Stephens suffered severe trauma when the apparatus he was backing ran over him this morning around 2 AM.
