Bio:
Anthony Piontek is a 19-year veteran of the fire service and is a Captain with the City of Green Bay, WI assigned to the Training Division, and a Captain and Training Officer with the Village of Howard, WI. He has worked Engine, Ladder, and Rescue Companies on both volunteer and career Departments. He was a member of the Department’s Training Advisory, Health and Safety, and Apparatus Specification Committees. Mr. Piontek manages the Training Division based on the needs of the Department, develops and delivers curriculum for all non-EMS activities, and assists the EMS Division in the delivery of continuing medical education. He has also worked as an instructor during many of the recruit academies over the last twelve years. He has coordinated and instructed the Fire Ops 101 course for IAFF Local 141 for the last eight years. He is a past member of the Fox Valley Task Force 3 Technical Rescue Team and the Brown County Arson Task Force.

A proponent of training in the fire service and industrial sector, Mr. Piontek is President and Chief Operations Officer of Fire & Industrial Response Enterprises, LLC, established in 2003. He is in charge of all independent contractors, instructors, scheduling, equipment, purchasing and marketing, and develops and teaches curriculum for both fire departments and industrial emergency response teams throughout the country. He has been a Fire Service Instructor at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College for the past 13 years, teaching in the Associate of Applied Science-Fire Science and State of Wisconsin Fire Service Certification programs. He has been in charge of designing and constructing a number of teaching props for the technical college, and assists in curriculum development, instructor development, and scheduling. He is the Instructor/Coordinator and heads the curriculum development sector for the Tomahawk Fire and Rescue School held annually in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. He has presented classes at the Wisconsin Firefighter’s Convention and the Professional Firefighter’s of Wisconsin Convention. He has instructed and presented at national firefighter conventions, including FDIC. Mr. Piontek has developed extensive training programs on Rapid Intervention, Firefighter Safety and Survival, and 1403 compliant live fire training using acquired structures and exterior flammable liquid props for fire department training, and numerous industrial emergency response curriculums for industrial fire brigades, confined space entry and rescue, hazardous materials response, and incident command and officer development.

Mr. Piontek has been published in several trade magazines including Fire Nuggets, Fire Engineering, and Fire Chief, and was a contributing editor for Jones and Bartlett Publishing Fundamentals of Firefighter Skills, 1st Edition, and Live Fire Training Instructor, currently under publication. He continues to further his education by attending many fire-based conferences and baccalaureate level classes annually. He has an Associates of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) in Fire Science from Fox Valley Technical College, is an alumnus of the National Fire Academy.

1403 and instructors

A few years ago I had a forum on Fire Engineering concerning the level of instruction experience or training to become a live fire instructor.Comments were mixed and even flew into a heated debate on the risk/benefit analysis of conducting such training.
