Tactical Command and Control

Although I do not agree with Chief Laymen on nozzle selection, I think his 1953  book titled: Fire Fighting Tactics is still  great reference material.

Here is a small sample: "A battlefield does not give an opportunity for study, one does what he can to apply what he already knows, therefore, it is necessary that he know thoroughly and be able to use his knowledge…

Sales Are Up

I could not sell my way out of a wet paper bag, unless I believed in the product. That was one of the reasons why I became a firefighter. I wanted to help people and I knew didn’t want be in sales. My dad was a salesman most of his life and I decided that it wasn’t for me. I could not get past the part that if I didn’t believe in it I couldn’t sell it.

I finally found a product that I could sell because I believe in it to the core: Basic Realistic Fire…

Fire Service Member New Year's Resolutions

Fire Service Members New Year’s Resolutions

From Rookies to Chiefs I have listed some resolutions for us to work on this year:

  • Train to be technically and tactically proficient on alarms, as an individual member and as a team. Train until it becomes habit.

  • Train with the nearest firehouse or department in your area. Set up some guidelines and procedures for alarms. The importance of this is having a coordinated…

Low Cost Hand's on Training

I would like to ask all firefighters to consider joining us at Wichita HoT this year. The dates are September 28 & 29. We have had a tradition of excellent keynote speakers and excellent hands on training. Wichita HoT is priced fairly so that we can provide the best training for as many firefighters as possible. The 2013 keynote speakers will be Chief Mike Lombardo (Buffalo N.Y. Retired) and Chief Dave McGrail from Denver Fire Department. All of the Wichita HoT staff are truly committed…

Sid, thanks for the great class @ HOT. I enjoyed it a lot. It was great to do some hose work again. Being on the bus (a.k.a amublance) we are mostly stuck doing truck work. Thanks and KTF.

Please allow me to invite you to a site designed by responders for responders... the crew that is doing it is CISM multilevel trained and are there for the guys after the bad calls. It helps the responders that do not yet have a team or would be worried that they asking for help would be seen as weakness. Please join and share it when you can. As a chaplain with over 25 years of service to fire departments I am excited with it's potential to provide support.

Hi Sid,
Working scems today. I heard from Frank Buck yesterday morning at the YMCA that Chief Keeton is retiring on July 18. That should make 3 battallion chief promotions, Trask leaving July 9, Keeton, and one due to divisions. Is that how you see it??
