Suggested Reading List for Chief Bob Burns (FDNY)

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People -  Stephen R. Covey

This is not a quick read.  It is sometimes a little corny, but very thought provoking.  If you take it to heart, it will make you a better person not just a better leader.

From Buddy to Boss - Chase Sargent (Virginia Beach FD Ret.)

This is the best leadership book written by a member of the fire service for the first line supervisor. There are some interesting quotes from past and present leaders and enough valid leadership lessons to make it worth your time.

Crucial Conversations - Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, Switzler

This is an excellent book on oral communication. It is the first in a series of four books written by these authors.  I recommend that all students read it. Most people that start with this book eventually end up reading all four.

The Leadership Challenge - Kouzes and Posner

A traditional Leadership book.  Good background and reference material.

Three websites that all fire officers should have in their favorites folder:

  1. www.firefighterclosecalls.com – The Secret List
  2. www.vitalsmarts.com – Leadership/Communication Newsletter
  3. www.fireengineering.com – Fire Service Training & Sims

I am always available to answer questions or discuss leadership issues via e-mail BCBB344@gmail.com  If you put Elsmere 2011 on the subject line, I will make sure that I open it promptly and respond as soon as possible.

Dan Madrzykowski (NIST) live interview/Q and A on Wednesday May 25th at 4:30 PM(Pacific) on Fire Engineering Radio

Join Capt. Mike Dugan (FDNY) and Capt. Mike Gagliano (Seattle Fire Dept.) as they chat with Dan Madrzykowski, of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), on a range of issues including:

1. Are fires “hotter” today than ever before?
2. What is the impact of plastics and synthetics on heat release rates and heat flux?
3. How should lightweight construction impact your tactical decisions?
4. Does correctly applied ventilation actually “cool” the interior environment?
5. Are we taking a risky approach in our current procedures in ventilating fuel rich, under ventilated situations?
6. Why are things like “flow paths” critical to both vent plan?
7. What is the latest information on “wind driven” fires?
8. Should we be hitting fires from the outside with water more often than is currently practiced?
9. Can we actually push fire with hose streams?
10. How is our current PPE, including the durability of our face pieces under high temperatures, holding up in today’s fires?
11. How accurate is the new wave of “scientific” research as it applies to the dynamic, variable intensive emergency scenes faced by firefighters?

These and a host of other questions, including the ones you call in ask, will be answered by the 2009 IFSI Instructor of the Year, Dan Madrzykowski.
