Where firefighters come to talk training

Many Fire Depts. require their members to be trained to the Haz-Mat Ops level. What are some things that you feel should be included in the Ops level course, and how do we make it more appealing so that the rank and file want to be involved?

I am teaching one now! MOre hours and more hands on
From what I see, you're either in or out when it comes to haz-mat. In other words, the student wants to be involved or they don't. I have been using a program that covers the required "stuff" in 472 and 1910.120, but, I try to tailor to what the departments are normally doing. There are far more questions than answers when it comes to; how to use a four gas meter, how to calibrate a four gas meter. What are the properties of the materials we are normally monitoring for? So, I hit on Carbon monoxide incidents, that "Sulpher Odor" call that they get two or three times a year, and I try to build off of that. I re-enforce the need for material ID and container ID as a prioirty, PPE always. The decon training needs are there too.
Defense is at the Operations level and we need to all remember that no matter what HazMat Level you are we must start at the Awareness level before we move on. I am a HazMat Commander and no matter if I am first on the scene or arrive after the HazMat Trailor I still start at the Awareness level ( Reconize and Identify) . As a HazMat Instructor I have an Awareness class every Operations, Tech, Specialist, and Command Class. If the basics are not completed we can not move towards decon, if decon is not completed we can move towards entry and so on.....

That is a very good point, just as in firefighting, the basics come through every time. The lesson I use takes each step of the 8 Step process as a module, after all eight steps, we start to tie it together to make sense. It is a good idea to build off the previous level of training in each of the levels.

The longer I am thinking about this the more I am coming up with. Does anyone deal with reportable quanitities and so on? I ask the question everytime I teach, "What is the reportable quantity for gasoline/motor oil in CT?" I am usually met with a few blank stares, or multiple answers. I teach to meet the standard, but I also want to put usefull information in there as well.
