It was company policy for the new firefighter to have the nozzle until they caught a structural fire. (A Job) Then they would move to the other positions/assignments. What does your company do and why?
We do not have a written policy on this, however, as the company officer, I want the newbie in front of me for several reasons. Accountability is the biggest thing, that speaks for itself. Second, I need to be behind the proby to make sure he doesn't steam himself or the rest of the crew. On an engine our primary function is putting out the fire. Get the kid needs to learn how to apply water correctly and hose control, when they grasp that they can move on.
My company puts the new guy on the nozzle. For 1 there are days when we only have a 3 man engine company and that is the only option. When we have 4 the new guy is still the nozzleman because he is working right next to the officer while the backup man is operating a little more independantly because he is constantly moving between the point of entry and any corners encountered. I feel it is good for the new guy to be on the nozzle because it gives the officer a good chance to teach him. Most importantly the officer must be constanly training with the new guy to make sure they know what they are doing when its game time.
