Hey PJ--We realize people want to split the 2 pieces of equipment but have found that it always leads to mistakes. We used to give the Officer the rope but found that distracted him too much so we gave that job to the Air/Nav. The Air is simply drug along until the victim is located--which is where the rope is handed off--and the air/nav moves up to secure the air. The Officer MUST focus on his crew, communication, the progress of the plan, and the environment (doesn't sound like much but under realistic conditions it's a bunch). Training brings things to a pretty realistic place but the one person that is truly short changed is the Officer because his decision making is not tested as it would be for real. The discipline to stay away from the victim and MANAGE and COMMUNICATE is critical -- and not likely to happen unless it has been absolutely drilled into him during training. None of us multi-task well on the fireground -- we all think we do but history repeatedly shows we don't.
