Profile Information

Residence.
North Pole Alaska
Department:
Ft. Wainwright Fire & Emergency Services and North Star Volunteer Fire Department
Title/rank:
Fire Inspector @ Wainwright and Lieutenant @ NSVFD
Years of public service:
23 total and as a volunteer with 17 being career
Agency structure:
Military fire department
Top issues in your department:
I think a lot of issues in our department are universal like most others.

My soap box issues are, Tradition is a big one! Being true to your Brothers even if they may be different and not in your group or not exactly think like you do....that really ruffles the feathers. Some people have no concept with what "Walk the Walk" Talk the Talk" really mean and you cannot have one without the other. Evan as I write this it will piss someone in my fd or one of their friends off and they will be out to try and make me look bad. I was asked to change my profile because I put in there that I was a Fire Inspector (Captain). I guess the two parallel bugles I wear on the collar of my shirt because I am an inspector are not as equivalent to other peoples' parallel bugles on their shirts and those are the same people who are supposed to be setting the example for the newer members in our department...WTF!!!
Professional Qualifications:
Pennsylvania FFI, II; State of Alaska EMT & IFSAC FF I, II, Officer I, II, Insp. I, II, Instr I, D/O MWS, Aerial, ARFF, Pumper; Hazmat IC & Technician; Trench- Confined space -Ice and High and low angle rescue; NIMS, CISM , Safety Officer, PIO
Topics you provide training for:
FF I, FF II, Fire Inspection procedures, driving apparatus, water supply, firefighting basics, I do my best to share with those that are willing to learn our trade with my knowledge I have learned over the years from others and being on the job.
Areas of expertise:
"Ancora Imparo" means " Still I am learning" Michelangelo

"Omnis Cedo Domus" "Everyone Goes Home I am a Firefighter"

I am no expert in any one area. I do have lots of knowledge in many areas that I love to share so I can make room to learn more from all the people on here. It is already happening and still wanting to learn more.....guess I have a huge appetite for the Brotherhood and I can't get enough.

You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

I would like to learn to play the bagpipes and to get more involved in learning and developing a State wide protocol for an Honor Guard so that we can all be uniform and do it the same way everywhere. i feel this is important because if you go to another area and need an honor guard most people would be familiar with the way it works and it would go much more smoothly.

Thanks everyone
Bio:
I'm like just about everyone else here! I am an ordinary guy who always wanted to be a fireman and as a single dad does on occasion extraordinary thing or two. Love having the greatest job in the world and love learning new stuff eveyday and interacting with the people we serve and wouldn't have it any other way!

I am not sure what I am going to do when I grew up?

Started as a jr. firefighter in 1985 @ the age of 14 in South Central PA.

U.S. Air Force Fire Protection Specialist 1991-1999 Eielson, Minot and Clear with two tours in Southwest Asia to U.A.E.

Joined North Star VFD in 1993 to present and in 1999 became a DOD Civilian firefighter in Alaska.

REMEMBERING KEOKUK:

Thanks again to T.S.L and Chief Goldfeder for reminding us to Never Forget!!! When we think of staffing and Firefighters who gave their lives (especially where staffing was a contributing factor) ...we remember Keokuk, Iowa. Today is the anniversary of the Line of Duty Deaths of Keokuk Assistant Fire Chief Dave McNally, 48, Firefighter Jason Bitting, 29, and Firefighter Nate Tuck, 39...all of whom were killed while attempting the rescue of three trapped kids-who also perished. These 3 Firefight… Continue

A Fireman loaned has been returned!

It is with a heavy heart and deep saddness that I inform everyone of the Passing Of Micheal DeVaughn Asst. Chief (Ret.) of the Eielson AFB FD, Alaska. Chief DeVaughn had a huge impact on the fire service in Interior Alaska in the early 70's and up until his retirement last year. He was very active in his community and loved to watch his oldest son coach the Eielson Ravens HS football team. Chief was a huge advocate for fire prevention and fire safety throughout his time at Eielson serving as the… Continue

A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE UNIVERSITY FD

I know that we are often sad and overcome by the events that happen to us and change our lives forever especially when it involves someone so loved, admired and close to us. I want to personally thank and applaud the outstanding efforts of the staff and students of the University FD for their relentless drive and long hours they all put in to make a fallen brothers celebration of life a very memorable and encouraging one for us all. I think everyone there felt that had a role to play in the cele… Continue

That was the year that 16 of us rode our Harley's to NYC and the boys on Marine 1 took us out to the Statue of Liberty. It was awesome. We slept at Batt. 4 and R-1 house's.. The guys were great to us. We returned the favor when a bunch of them rode through to Sturgis.......

Brother don't ever think that you are letting your guys down because you miss a few runs, If your spending time with the little one they understand if would be different if you were just lying around at the house and not going. Embrace every min. that you get to spend with the one that has your heart more than anything in the world because before you know she will be gone off to school or getting married and leaving daddy .
