EVERY DAY IS TRAINING DAY

Profile Information

Residence.
Kewaskum, WI
Department:
Kewaskum Fire and Rescue
Title/rank:
Firefighter/EMT-B/Fire Inspector
Years of public service:
12
Agency structure:
Combination fire department
Top issues in your department:
Daytime staffing is an issue in our department due to the majority of members working out of town. In our combination department, our Chief is our only full time paid member. He covers EMS duty during the week. The rest of us are paid on call members. With only 3 training exercises per month, it is difficult to cover the training needs that our members may have. It is even more difficult to convince some members, (and even some officers), that our training is lacking.
Professional Qualifications:
WI FF2, EMT-B, WI Fire Inspector 1, Hazmat Ops
Topics you provide training for:
Automobile Extrication, Truck and Engine Company Tactics.
Bio:
I have been a firefighter for 11 years. I joined the Beechwood Vol. Fire Dept. in Beechwood, WI in 1996. I served as a Firefighter and HEO until moving to the village of Kewaskum. I have been a member of Kewaskum Fire and Rescue since 2004. I serve as a paid on call firefighter and EMT-B. We serve an EMS territory of approx. 100 square miles, and a first due fire territory of approx. 25 miles. KFD responds to approx. 400+ calls per year. 80% of which is EMS. We operate out of a single station with 2 engines, 1 50 ft quint, 2 tenders, 3 multi-purpose vehicles,(1 equipment truck, 1 wildland brushtruck, and a 6-wheeled wildland firefighting/ems atv.), and 2 ambulances. I always look for new and better ways to train both myself and others on new building hazards, fire behavior changes, and tactics. I feel that what we don't know, or train for, will lead to firefighter injuries or deaths.
