Guide for aspiring fire fighters in India

Scope for fire professionals :

Male and female aspirant have an equal job opportunity in this field. They will get job opportunity in state and municipal fire brigades, in industrial fire brigades, in railway and airports fire brigade, at high rise building, at five-star hotels and hospitals. In Indian scenario, in recent years, Increase industrialization, the introduction of new life safety rules and regulations, and government level effort to implement effective disaster handling systems raises demand for trained qualified fire professionals, thus increasing the possibility for a new entrant to get their opportunity.

About fire profession:

Moto of fire professional is we serve to save. In peacetime, they were found busy in maintaining equipment, updating records and other routine profession related works. In emergencies, they work in adverse environments to save lives and properties. They carry firefighting and rescue operation during natural and other disasters. Fire professionals need physical stamina, commitment, discipline, punctuality, teamwork, decision-making, leadership and risk-taking capacity, to discharge their duty in adverse conditions during an emergency

How to Join the Fire Service ?:

There are multi-level entries in the service in different states, but new entrants can join the fire services at below three levels, provided they pass a required physical and educational qualification driving license for heavy vehicles.

1.Fireman/Leading Fireman/Driver: The minimum qualification to join at this level is SSC /HSC with 6-month basic firemanship course (with Syllabus prescribed by SAFC) from government recognised institute. Many departments first recruit the suitable candidates and provide them in-house induction training before giving responsibilities.

Physical Standard for male and female to join as a fireman:

Age: Between 18 to 25 years

Height: Minimum 165 cm

Weight: Minimum 50 kg for male and 46 kg for female

Chest: Normal 81 cm and 86 cm with expanded for male candidates, for female there is no minimum requirement

Physical test: You must be able to run 100 yards distance in one minute (with weight equal to your own weight). You must be able to climb a rope or vertical pipe to a height of 8 to 10 feet from the ground.

2. Sub officer/ or equivalent supervisory level: The minimum qualification to join at this level is a graduate in any discipline with sub officer course from NFSC or equivalent course (with Syllabus prescribed by SAFC) from other government recognise institute. Physical standard required for this level is same as fireman

3. A**. Station Officer/ Station Officer/ Fire Engineering GET: The minimum qualification to join at the level required a graduate of fire engineering or equivalent qualification from NFSC or other governments recognise institute. Physical standard required for this level is same as fireman

Fire Training Courses & Institutes Available in India :

Firefighters need practical as well as theoretical training to develop the necessary knowledge, skill, attitude, physical fitness, vision and mental alertness. Ideal Institute to join fire training courses is Institute with good infrastructure and facilities like adequate capacity classrooms, qualified faculties and supporting staff, training equipment, facility for outdoor practical training, hostel accommodations, modern simulators for different fire emergency and an adequate number of types of equipment for training in other disasters.Here is a list of some good firefighting training institutes for re...
