Where firefighters come to talk training

The fire service is rich in tradition, stories, pomp, and legacies - and it is legacy that brings me full circle to this cartoon. Some families can boast generations of service to a community, or having married into another fire service family to carry on a lineage that in some cases spans a century. Me? I’m the first of my family to hear and follow this noble calling, and while my daughter doesn’t have any immediate plans to follow in my footsteps, she has grown up a tailboard-brat and is dating a firefighter (insert stern dad glare here). However, she is following in my creative path and is now a Junior in art school pursuing a career as a Photographer.

For a couple of years now I have been trying to find a way to capture family legacy in a cartoon, when the answer finally hit me - a collaboration. Of the 300 plus fire service cartoons that I have created over the past ten years, this cartoon may very well be my favorite because it is the first that my daughter and I have drawn together. For the first time, there are two Combs signatures on a cartoon - and I couldn’t be more proud!

So, while you are getting together with family this Holiday season to share love and warmth, take a moment to reflect on your own legacy and what it means to you. As for me, I’ve got a Combs and Combs original to hang in my studio:)
