Where firefighters come to talk training

I was watching the wind driven fire research and recognized a bit of irony. During the wind driven fire study a large PPV fan was used to create the wind for the study. A fire curtain was deployed to block the wind from the fan in order to control the wind driven event and prevent the fire from becoming a blow torch inside. So, I thought, the smaller version of that fan has been used to burn down many structures and cause a few injuries along the way. During a recent trip to Texas a firefighter friend of mine said, "In one part of the country the are preventing wind driven fires and in other parts they are causing them". Well I couldn't resist that one. That is pure Hump Day SOS material right there! Maybe all the fire fighters standing in the front door with a PPV fan blowing in are actually saving lives by serving as a fire curtain? Recent videos have shown a few PPV scenario's "GONE BAD". PPV when the fire is still burning can quickly go bad because of all the unknowns. It works great in a burn building but structures with voids create a very different result. I have seen it work successfully a couple of times but I have seen it go bad dozens more. Be careful when creating WIND DRIVEN fires on purpose! This video has been out there a while but it still tales the tale http://youtu.be/iTInZhv4ZyE
