Charged Pittsburgh firefighters facing 'last chance'

Does your department have a drug and alcohol policy and what is your departments policy regarding these issues? If your department has no policy how would you handle this? What are your thoughts on giving fellow firefighters another chance if they get busted for drugs or alcohol?

I think this is a good topic to discuss especially on the alcohol dependancy issues, it is a drug that kills and destroys!

Below is an article concerning several PBF firefighters.

I agree with you brother 100%. We are in the publics eye and they will loose trust in us if the see public servants in the paper for these issues. Makes them wonder what is really going on at the firehouses on and off duty.

Brad...This could be a touchy subject.
Our department, in the event of a failed drug test, utilizes a city sponsored EAP program. Same thing with a DUI/DWI charge. Suspension are left up to the Board of Public Safety and each case is handled on a case by case basis. In the last 5 years we have had numerous Firefighters/Officers get busted with a DUI...some twice within a year. One of the offenders with two DUIs took early retirement (he was going to be demoted), another took a demotion from Captain to FF and remains on the job.

I Personally, abide by the ZERO Tolerance rule. We must be responsible for our actions, we ARE and SHOULD BE held to a higher standard...Public trust mandates it.

For fear of a long and lengthy debate I am going to avoid my soapbox, and leave my comment as is...
