Where firefighters come to talk training

I don’t know about you but I have dealt with brain smoke in the past for many years. Now, I do not mean this literally as if products of combustion had found their way inside, but figuratively; that “smoky” feeling in your head that makes it difficult to see correct answers easily or to think clearly. The thing is, until I became healthier I did not realize how much my thinking was under attack. The more I learned what type of food and lifestyle choices were right for me, the more my thinking and concentration improved. This made it easier for me to get things done faster. I also noticed my energy was improving and so was my creativity. And we all know how important it is for firefighters to be able to think quickly and creatively on their feet.

Now all of us are different, but I have seen at times in my own life, and in other people’s lives, that when we live healthier we are able to accomplish more than when we did not focus on taking care of ourselves. Some have even discovered new desires and gifts that they did not realize they had in the first place. Try to think of these tips like well-timed positive pressure ventilation. You are searching for a victim in a structure and have no thermal imaging camera to speed things up, then suddenly someone fires up the fan and pushes all the smoke out of the room making it easier to see what you are looking for.    

Do you struggle with brain smoke? Just think what you could accomplish if you were able to think clearer. How would that affect your concentration, your career, your personal life and your goals? Below I have listed a few ideas that may help.

 

  • Reduce Your Sugar Intake – Too much sugar can cause havoc with your body and your mind. There is much information today that talks about the health problems that too much sugar can bring on, but too much sugar can also block your creativity and concentration. I believe enjoying sugar in moderation (and following your physician’s instructions) is one good way to not only live healthier, but also think clearer. 

 

  • Start Sweating – Aerobic exercise such as cycling can help to increase the amount of oxygen consumed during your workout. Regular aerobic exercise may also stimulate the growth of new brain cells as you get older. Of course, you should talk with your physician to see what exercise is right for your health.    

 

  • Eating the Right Amount of Protein – When I talk with my clients I continually remind them that their body is constantly working to stay balanced. When our bodies become unbalanced illnesses can take place, a lack of energy can occur and you guessed it, brain smoke can sneak in. Finding the right kind of protein and eating the right amount of protein for you is one way to help you stay balanced. Too little protein can contribute to craving sweets, feeling spacey, jittery and weak. Too much protein can cause low energy, feeling heavy and again it can cause cravings for sweets.   

 

  • Drink Water – Sometimes when brain smoke kicks in, it could be a sign that you are dehydrated. Making sure you drink enough good quality water every day can help to reduce sluggish thinking and fatigue. If you are not a fan of plain water then adding some lemon, lime or fresh mint leaves may improve the taste so you can enjoy it more.    

 

 

Keep in mind, making too many changes at once may overwhelm your system when it is not used to living a certain way. I believe it is good to begin with making small changes and then gradually add more changes over time so your body can adjust to what you are doing. What is important is keeping your brain clear of the “smoke” so you can do your job, and live your life, the best way possible.
