I remember going to an accident with the Squad in Engine 13's area, because they were on scene when we got there and helping to extricate someone by minding the hoses for the guy on the jaws of life.
There were a few other calls that I went to riding in the passenger seat of HIT 2 but nothing memorable. Then, one day I came to ride and the Flying Squad2 and HIT 2 were gone........in their place was this:
If my memory is right, the Heavy Rescue Squad 2 had been out for repairs, which is why they were running the older two trucks when I started riding along. The new squad 2 was quite a treat for a country boy on a department with all commercial chassis apparatus and only seating for 3 in the cab! For the first time I got dressed on the way to a call, right down to SCBA! No pulling the box out of the side compartment when we arrived and opening it up and getting out the SCBA! No sir, not when you rode with Squad 2!
The box had a command center in it, so on a large incident, the IC and his staff could run the show from in there. It was, and is a nice piece of apparatus. (Although it should be nearly 20 years old now!!) They even had their own patch, just for the squad company (Another new experience for me!) which they took a lot of pride in!
Next time- I get my first taste of fire, GI style!
