Patriotism

Well it seems a lot has been happening in OUR country lately with American Flag displays in some apartment complex in Albany Oregon or a decal in a Pa FD not being allowed! In all my years in the Fire Service not much has been held more sacred than Patriotism and displaying the American flag and all that it stands for! We have all given our own personal sacrifices in one way or another and an insurmountable number have given their lives for OUR FLAG and COUNTRY to allow her to forever wave! What… Continue

Remember in all we do this day 9/11

This is a dark day for Americans and especially our profession. We must remain ever vigilant and never wavering in spirit and in Brotherhood. For what makes us weak will forever make us stronger. Fear not this day for God has us in His hands and the angels are among us. For today is a day of remembrance and also a day of reckoning that we know that those that gave their all are in Heaven and one day we will meet again. So on this day and everyday always remember to honor not only our brothers a… Continue

An article on "Where Has the Brotherhood Gone?"

By Jason Zigmont Whenever I visit different fire departments and talk to senior members, they all seem to say the same thing: "The fire service is not the way it used to be." They may have a point. It's not just the ever-changing technology and regulations. The biggest change seems to be in the decay of the brotherhood of firefighters. There was a time when you could rely on your fellow firefighters for help with anything and the firehouse was the center of the community. Now you are lucky if… Continue

Thursday the 4 of June 2009 was like any other day to get up and go to work for many and for others to enjoy their day(s) off. There were the normal routine calls and then later in the early afternoon a cal came in for mutual aid to the City of Fairbanks for a RIT team to assist with a coal fire at the downtown power plant. Then around three my volunteer fd North Star gets dipatched for a reported wild land fire about a mile from my house. Upon arrival crews found a 2-3 acre fire burning and head… Continue

5" ground manifold catastrophic failure in NJ

Got this in an email and I hope everyone checks their equipment on a regular basis for potential cracks and damage. Have you ever seen this before? What could have caused it: lack of proper care, wear and tear, dropping it on the ground, excessive high pressures? ...it has yet to be determined. Here is one similar that I found online. I'm not sure of the brand they had in the pictures.… Continue

Please help bail me out of jail on May 20th 2009 in Fairbanks for the MDA Lock Up

Over the last couple of years I have had the priviledge of coordinating our annual "Fill the Boot" for MDA here in my Fd. I don't know how but I do know who has signed me up for the MDA Executive Lock Up. So this year I am starting early and going to do my best to raise my bail to get out of jail in an effort to raise money for MDA. I would love to raise my $2400 bail and even more in hopes of sending a few kids to summer camp and maybe also attend myself this year! I know how much everyone admi… Continue

Landmark Restaurant in Fairbanks lost to fire.

It's sad to see anything lost to a fire but when you weigh in the "Risk vs. Benefit" the lives of innocent bystanders and our safety comes first and the property and any extension to existing structures that may be near by come second. I was out of town in my nice warm ice house when I got a phone call about the fire when it happened. By all accounts of what I have heard about the incident, it sounds like the fire was burning for some time and had gone on undiscovered for quite some time before… Continue

Who Will Lead FEMA Next?

Okay here is the latest and greatest attempt to better the American Fire Service and the rest of the Emergency Responders in America by President Obama. Fugate to Head FEMA Nothing against this guy but what is wrong with finding someone with a little more experience and familiar with how things might be done across the country and not just in one state or on one side of the country.
