The Value of A Rescue

The value of a fully staffed rescue cannot be over stated. With budgets shrinking in 2009 some people advocate cutting rescues and other special operations services. This is a mistake because of the level of service and expertise required. Continue

A Pause For The Fire Cause

In the fire service the greatest strength is people. It's been this way since the first firefighter stood up to combat fire. In much the same the Special Forces are only as good as their cross trained professionals, so to is the fire department only as good as the newest firefighter. As a writer it's my responsibility to connect firefighters, to give them access, to be the conduit in which information flows. Nothing can replace the thrills I felt riding apparatus but if there is anything close… Continue

Firefighter Risk

We often talk of risk in firefighting. The fact is firefighting poses daily risks to the lives of the men and women who pull on gear, head to a scene, and work to help another. Often we focus on acute risk. However, there is another risk over time each of you is dealing with. Firefighters have a better chance of developing cancer than the average citizen. It probably doesn’t surprise you because you know the job is full of risks. Cancer has to worry about itself, right? Wrong. Cancer can devel… Continue

Ladder The Building

Having been fortunate to talk to some of the best ladder company (truckies) people in the world over the last 15 years it has become apparent we all must fight for greater emphasis on ladder work. Far too many examples of the lack of effective truck work exist in reports we study to determine how to reduce line of duty deaths. I mentioned this in a podcast a few days ago. One of the best books on truck work is Random Thoughts by Tom Br… Continue

Chief Tom Carr Leading Charleston Down The Right Path

Leadership after a tragedy takes on a different meaning than at any other time. Imagine the task of the leadership after the charge of the Light Brigade as they mounted an ill fated run into heavy Russian Artillery. In Charleston the loss of nine brothers is never far from any discussion. It is the “fire”, so much so everything is discussed as “before or after” the events of June 18, 2007. A void in leadership, apparent to all who cared for the department, needed to be addressed. However, hirin… Continue

Don't Wear Slippers To Training

Observing training with different departments allows for a better understanding of methods and solutions. Without exception, thus far, one area wherein the success rate is high is departments who train in full PPE. Too often firefighters wear helmet and gloves, or less, while performing training evolutions. Approaching training with this mindset cheats the firefighter. When it’s time to raise a ladder for rescue PPE will be worn. Training and education in the fire service is vital. However, tr… Continue

Steve Hagan Dies In Line of Duty

Lieutenant Steve Hagan of the Blenheim, South Carolina Fire Department died after returning from an EMS call today. It has been a difficult two year period here in South Carolina. The deaths of nine Charleston firefighters plus the additional deaths in 2007 and 2008 hover over the state. The latest, Lieutenant Steve Hagan of Blenheim Fire Department in Marlboro County, occurred after a response to a call. Blenheim is located near Bennettsville, South Carolina. The department works diligently t… Continue

Living the Dream

Last night a great deal of the past flowed through my mind as I contemplated how lucky I've been to be around the fire service. No greater group of people exist than firefighters. While there is always contention it's family. What other passion can you say that about? Never forget each day is an opportunity to live the dream. Don't wait until it's late, too late, to discover your passion for the job. Continue

Making A Difference Now In The Fire Service

Patience is a virtue we are told and who are we to argue with the virtuous. It makes perfect sense for much of life is spent waiting. In firefighting, where patience is a 24 hour tour, the mantra is all good things come to those who wait. While true in many areas it is manifestly untrue in training. Face it. Firefighters don't get the numbers of fires the brothers and sisters did in the period of 1960-1990. Thus, in view of reduced call volume, training becomes more vital. It can't replace fire… Continue

Thoughts Compiled While Watching Vertical Ventilation

  • The emphasis on "truck work" is picking up speed in certain areas whilst in others it is treated with contempt. How is it possible to view truck work with disdain?
  • Working out at the gym with other firefighters led to a discussion about people who are obese but doing nothing to address it. Their goal, it is surmised, is to make rank quickly with hopes of never having to pull their weight.
  • Failure on the fireground can often be traced to the training ground.
  • If

Firefighters Must Fight For The Future

The dernier cri of politicians is now "the economy is killing our town, city, state." Whilst true in many cases it is an old statement, used far too often during the past three decades. Our economy is in poor shape but we can't allow it to destroy public safety.

From Atlanta to Phoenix the cuts in staffing, closing of stations, and other "proactive budgetary moves" are leaving tremendous gaps in protection. This isn't acceptable even within the framework of a larger, dismal economic pi

Fire Muster In South Carolina

If you have never experienced a fire muster there is a golden opportunity on August 23, 2008. The North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum will hold a fire muster in the parking lot in North Charleston.

The museum is located near the Tanger Outlet mall. It's easy to access from either I-26 or the Mark Clark Expressway. Readers of Firefighter Hourly who want to fly in for the one day event will find the

FDIC Review and Assorted Thoughts

FDIC is always a splendid show. Sadly, for the three of us who went up together, a death in the family led us back much earlier than we anticipated. However, whilst walking the convention floor, I was able to view the best and brightest the fire service has to offer.

One of the highlights for me were the brothers from Bavaria. Courteous, friendly and ready to learn they were a joy to watch.

Of course the entire trip is in the back of our minds because a friend and brother lost a

Sloping Driveway Part II

Yesterday I was in the state capitol and whilst driving to a friends house I noticed an engine company sitting in front of a house with a line off the rig. Certain the second due would pull up shortly I hastened to get by but noted the piece of apparatus was parked in front of a sloping driveway. It bothers me.

Apparatus parked in front of sloping driveways are targets. If a garage is burning and flammable liquids pour down the driveway guess where they will collect? The driver, busy w

None Save The Brave

In various times of our lives we are fortunate to meet people who profoundly impact the way we think. The first person to alter the way I thought was William F. Buckley who took the time to write back to me when I was but ten years old. Later I met Harry Griffin, Andy Fredericks and Mo. In the near past I've become friends with Bobby Halton who is as good a guy as you would ever want to meet. He seems to come along and correct my flightpath just prior to a disaster!

The fire service al
