So it's only been a month and one day since I had my surgeries and I've already injured myself. Today was the first day I've really got to ride my bike, so I decided to go mountain biking up in the mountains by Pine Flat Lake. Everything was okay until I took a turn too fast on a dirt path and found myself tumbling down a 30 foot cliff down into a ravine. Good Job Detroit Battalion 9

I look at the Fire Engineering web page more than once daily. There are several places I go when I visit - one of them being the photo;s on the front page. I skim through and look for good things and bad. I find both (in my opinion).

Kudos' to DFD and the 9th. Battalion. This picture is great (again - in my opinion).

An Encouraging Training Session

I just finished giving a two-day training program to a very “together” group of firefighters and officers. I won’t mention where the training took place, but it was very apparent that these departments worked well together.

The group of fire departments was part of an area where over 40 departments existed in the same county. Of course, there was a major metropolitan department representing one of the 40 departments and surprisingly, they were represented at the training.

Respect

Far too many officers, whether it be insecurity or ego driven, demand their due respect - for it is more important and self-serving to be recognized by rank than as an effective leader. Respect is earned by action alone, not self-gratification. Earn your subordinate's trust, and respect will come naturally.

Vehicle near miss vehicle vs. building

Had a vehicle operation related close call today. Getting ready for the holidays we were hanging holiday lights in our radio room. Of course we couldn't complete the job without having to use something from the rig. We used a small step ladder from the engine to hang the lights. Of course the newer firefighter was asked to get it from the rig. In doing so left the compartment door open which was on my side. I was unaware he was going to leave it open as we never should. TAKING CARE OF YOUR LEATHERHEAD

So I decided it was time to either get a new helmet or restore mine to a serviceable condition. Upon close inspection, (this means taking stock of my helmet's grievances) I found the liner worn in several areas although the ratchet was functioning, the attachment points were in a bad way, the earlaps were ripped and heavily soiled, the paint was badly cracked and chipped in multiple places and the exposed leather was beginning to dry out. More "Nevers"

In my last post, I was talking about the “NEVER” word. You see, we say things around the kitchen table and the young crew members listen and pick up on this stuff. Grant for add on Fire Dept

Our fire department,has did and lot of work on our fire dept. Things are looking great,and we have been putting in some kind of hours. I just got the time to be back on this site. Since i quit the care giver job,after finding out,one of the homes was eat up with Black mold and bacteria.,which i got asthma.Since i quit ,my asthma has not gave me no trouble. Since then,the lady has moved out of her home,to another home next door,which may have mold.These brick homes was built close to the ground.… Continue

My Decision....

So as you know from my last posting that I have taken a break from firefighting. Well after I have my surgery on December 1st and recover from rehab and such I have decided to return to the department. At the age of 21 I have seen a lot of things people twice my age will never imagine of seeing, but even with that, my heart is in being a firefighter. Never say Never

I usually question veteran firefighters that tell a recruit or new-be “Son! Never hit smoke with a hose stream – Only the “red-stuff”!” or “Never take your gloves off”. (For those of you who are scratching your head saying “Tommie told me to never hit smoke”! If your intent is to cool unprotected steel, like the underside of a metal deck roof you are crawling under and all you see is smoke up there – it’s OK to hit smoke! Recipe For Disaster

I love Halloween! It's my favorite holiday and my favorite time of year, so it only seemed appropriate to combine the "witching hour" into my latest commentary.

She really is brewing quite a disaster, and sadly, it doesn't take a witch to cook-up this poison - we do a fine job, ourselves.

Suicide Awareness
