Courage and Valor Fun Run

This run is to raise money to support the Ray Downey Courage and Valor award. Ray ran everyday. We should run or walk everyday. Leadership is about living. The run is on the last day of FDIC a fitting way to end the week. If you can't make it how about just registering for the shirt. I will be "running" (at the speed of smell) so if you want a good laugh come watch a… Continue

Seat and Tool Assignments/Fire Ground Efficiency

I have been looking at ways to increase fire ground efficiency. I want to get some info on the different ways fire companies deploy resources on a structure fire.

The Following questions are based on a first alarm assignment. I want to isolate those initially assigned companies because they have the greatest impact on overall incident outcome. I am looking for honest real world answers not ideal situation answers.

What is the minimum total personnel assigned to a structure fire for a… Continue

Am I too emotionally weak for this profession?

I'm no veteran to this life as a firefighter, but I'm no rookie either. I've seen messed up things in life doing this job just as much as the next firefighter, but sometimes this job really gets to me. I don't know what's down this road anymore. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, but sometimes it seems like it. I try to stay strong and show it doesn't bother me, but I think it's really getting to me now. I guess it got to my husband as well. From one of my previous blog posts some… Continue

Another Well Known Secret...WTF?

How many of you just click on a FD or FD related site and view it but fail to check out the links page for other FD's or more stuff to make the brotherhood and ourselves better? Be it training or just gee whiz info that is interesting and encouraging to read or watch. How many of us out there have explored every link in this community or on FE itself? Probably impossible but every bit worth your time and energy to get all you can out of a FREE site you come across. If you aren't looking at the… Continue

Live Fire Experiments Provide Data on the Effects of Fire Resources (Staffing)

NIST Press Release On Staffing study

ROCKVILLE, Md.—At a live demonstration of fire safety experiments today, a group of firefighting, public safety and scientific organizations described a landmark collaborative study examining the effect of firefighting crew sizes and equipment arrival times on fire growth rates and a person’s ability to survive in a structure-related building fire. Funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), this firefighter safety and resource… Continue

Clarence Center Crash & Black Sunday News and NIOSH

Just a few short weeks after celebrating the miracle on the Hudson, America today is mourning the loss of 50 citizens who boarded a plane last night from New Jersey reroute to Buffalo New York. Reported to be on that plane was a woman who was going to celebrate the birthday anniversary of her husband which she lost on 9/11. Tragically one person among the dead was a resident of the home which the plane impacted. Clarence Center New York is a small community just outside of Buffalo where most… Continue

The Best Example of Why We Must Be Prepared...

I sent this out to all of the people in my Battalion today and thought I'd share with you all. Hope you enjoy it.

Below are three links that will let you see the recent interview on "60-Minutes" with the crew of U.S Airway Flight 1429. I want you to watch all three portions. Make sure when you watch them, you can give them your full attention. Though these videos are obviously about the flight and subsequent successful rescue of all 155 passengers, a subtle comparison can… Continue

The Precious Faith fire, ten years later.

As I sit to write this post, I am overwhelmed with many emotions. For the past ten years, I have found myself torn between celebrating the love of valentine's day and the memory of my three lost brothers. The events of Feb. 15, 1999 came on the heels of romance and love for all of us at station 13. We all started that day, the 15th, satisfied we had passed yet another milestone of roses and thoughtfully written cards. Our respective spouses willingly allowed us to run to the morning tone of… Continue

Ladder co. 72/Commercial Fire

On Jan 20th, Snohomish County F.D. #7 was toned out for a Commercial Fire Response at the Waste Management depot site in 72's first due area.

Ladder co. 72, led by Lt. Prince, was first to arrive and reported heavy smoke coming from a mechanic truck bay with a vehicle inside on fire. The vehicle was a Waste Management Garbage Truck. At that point the large roll up door suddenly came crashing down with no warning. Ladder 72 advised that they would be forcing entry and to have the first due… Continue

Take some time to keep-up with research that is important to all of us.

Often, we get caught-up in seeking information about tactics and task level training needs and desires. Additionally, a lot our members (especially the younger ones) spend a significant amount of searching the Internet for dramatic fire “videos”. Don’t get me wrong, there is value to both of these pursuits. However, I would also encourage all members from all age and seniority groups to spend more time looking at, reading and learning from several on-going research projects that have real… Continue
