The lost art of the fire service

What is the lost art of the fire service? Is it a specific technique? A size up routine? A way to use certain tools? Or is it something much more basic than this?In my opinion, the lost art of the…Continue

Motivating members for a physical phytness program

I am a volunteer.  I have a Monday through Friday, 9-5 job that sometimes has me working nights and weekends outside of my duties at the station and on calls.  I am an unpaid professional, or at least I try to be :) In my "spare time" (which is a term that is coming to be less and less familiar to me) I do what I can to provide my service to my community at the fire house. Just ask my fiance and she will tell you how much time I give! :) For myself, I have fully embraced the concepts and…See More

The lost art of the fire service

What is the lost art of the fire service? Is it a specific technique? A size up routine? A way to use certain tools? Or is it something much more basic than this?In my opinion, the lost art of the fire service is a question. It is a way of understanding the job that we do. Now, I only have 11 humble years under my belt, but I have been involved with enough rookie training in my neck of the woods to understand that not enough new firefighters are asking, in my opinion, THE most important…See More

A scary trend

One of the headlines on FireEngineering this morning reads"NY fire dept says it's recruiting more minorities".  This statement doesn't sit well with me....

I come from Vermont...potentially the least diverse state in the Union.  So maybe it's just my lack of experience dealing with racial issues, or maybe it's my lack of understanding on WHY IT MATTERS?  Wasn't the whole civil rights movement about getting past the color of someones skin?  I get it...there were terrible,…

First due on scene report

One of the first things I learned when I started in the fire service at the impressionable age of 15 was the importance of the first-due on-scene report.  I remember sitting in the living room with my older brother when a call came over the scanner.  (I would be lying if I said that I remember what department got called out, or what the call was.)  We listened for a little bit, and them my brother, being the older, wiser, (albeit uglier) fire fighter that he was, did as he often did and…
