John Wright replied to Lt. Billy Greenwood's discussion The Mayday - Listen to the backstory on "Tap the Box"
"Thanks again Bill for having me on the show!  I hope you guys are all dried out from your hurricane.  I'm still a little disappointed that you didn't send any of that rain our way."

John Wright replied to Frank Ricci's discussion looking for anyone who believes that firefighters should not fight vacant fires.
"http://backstepfirefighter.com/why-we-search/   Found the above site last night, has close to 100 links to stories about vacant buildings that were anything but vacant.    My thoughts, if the building is 100% vacant (which is hard to…"

John Wright replied to Jason Hoevelmann's discussion The Daily Drill 2: VES
"I wasn't going to tackle these questions because I didn't know the answer to some of them, but what the hell.  I'd rather learn something and look like a fool on the internet, than look like a fool on the fire ground because I…"

John Wright replied to John Wright's discussion Mayday Training
"Thanks Mike.  I have to agree with you, but I don't like it.  I'm a "tech geek" and love gadgets, but I suppose nothing beats doing it the old fashoned way.  Those would be perfect for HAZMAT calls though. "

Michael Bricault replied to John Wright's discussion Mayday Training
"-We explored these comm devices several times over the years. The first time we looked at them the rep was candid in explaining that the design intent was for situations like haz mat and not interior structural firefighting. -We looked at hem again…"

John Wright replied to John Wright's discussion Mayday Training
"On the notion of keeping in communications with command, has anyone used the radio mounts that clip into the Scott masks?  I am particularly looking at the E-Z Radiocom II or the Talk Around.  I heard a rumor that these things…"

Jason Hoevelmann replied to John Wright's discussion Mayday Training
"I would echo Brick's comments. In addition I would emphasize the importance of handling a Mayday.  Many times that is a cog in the wheel that is easily ignored but can save a life.  One thing we talk about is taking control.…"

John Wright replied to John Wright's discussion Mayday Training
"Thanks for the info Mike.  I think I misspoke, the "live fire" training I was thinking of were the times that we went to the drill field and did evolutions through the building without burning any hay.  And I agree completely,…"

Michael Bricault replied to John Wright's discussion Mayday Training
"-I think it sounds like you're hitting all the buttons here. As an instructor the one thing I would NOT DO is a "spontaneous" Mayday during ANY live fire training exercises. That creates to much of a potential problem and confusion…"

Lee Finlayson replied to John Wright's discussion Mayday Training
"Sounds to me your doing all the right things, I would suggest you stick to LUNAR or UCAN. LUNAR works for me due to the fact that if all the firefighter gets out is Location atleast you have that to start out. Your right by training to keep…"

Mayday Training

I am looking for some input on Mayday training.  We have had several training classes over the past few years, and I want to see if anyone has any better ideas than what we have been doing.  This is what we have done in the past.  We started off by reviewing our SOGs and discussing when to call it and how to get the information across to direct crews to your location.  We went with LUNAR, but also talked about UCAN.  We also review any call that we can find on the internet that involved a…See More

John Wright replied to Jason Hoevelmann's discussion "Follow the Coupling Drill" Anywhere
"It's easy for me to "cheat" on the cut up section of hose.  When the line is charged with water, it is more difficult to tell where the hose stops and the smooth collar of the female coupling starts with a gloved hand. …"

John Wright replied to Jason Hoevelmann's discussion SCBA-Restricted Openings
"Excellent idea.  Given that fact that I don't miss many meals, I have issues with studs on 16 inch centers.  I've always had to loosen my shoulder straps and slide through torso first and pack second.  I'll be sure to…"

John Wright replied to Jesse Parry's discussion Search markers (what are people using and what is the latest and greatest?)
"Here are two options that I found, the wooden one comes with a strap and the aluminum one has a clip.  I'm not sure how you advance the chalk or the grease pen down the tube though.  As far as attaching them to the SCBA, you could use…"

John Wright replied to Jesse Parry's discussion Search markers (what are people using and what is the latest and greatest?)
"We were all given small pieces of chalk, but the container that we had them in broke if you put any pressure on it and it was hard to dig out of your pocket with your gloves on.  Plus it crumbled when it got wet.  We recently switched to…"

Profile Information

Lives in:
Frisco, Texas
Department:
Flower Mound Fire Department
Title/rank:
Captain/Paramedic
Years of public service:
16
Agency structure:
Paid fire department
Top issues in your department:
We have recently expanded our troops by almost a third. We were fortunate enough to hire 29 new firefighters, opened two new stations, added a Truck Company and made several promotions. To call it growing pains is an understatement, but we are seemingly handling it well.
Professional Qualifications:
Advanced Firefighter, Intermediate Instructor, HAZMAT Tech, Licensed Paramedic, Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, Associates in Paramedicine.
Topics you provide training for:
I have been heavy on EMS training over the past several years, specializing in Cardiology related subjects. With my recent promotion, I am making the switch to more fire based training. I have taken an interest in Mayday and RIT training and will be making firefighter safety my top priority when it comes to training.
Areas of expertise:
I'm not an expert at anything, technology moves too fast to make that claim.
Bio:
I started my career in Huntsville Texas as a part time/paid firefighter in 1995. Started with Flower Mound in 1999 and have loved every minute of it. I have a loving wife who supports me and a 3 year old son who keeps me on my toes.
