- Jim, thanks for the comments. I wholeheartedly agree that the TIC is one tool that can aid us in determining whether or not we have an internal fire. My only caution in using it in this manner is that by the time you can witness it thru the TIC it is well developed fire and there will be other signs. I have some great video from live burns that show that the TIC will not pick up thermal reading until we have a rocking and rollin' fire inside and there are numerous other signs. There is also a new video and study from the guys in Chicago showing how you can't use a TIC to determine truss assembly stability for the same reasons. If you would like I'll look for their link and send it to you. Really good stuff.

- Jim, Use caution when teaching about size up with a TIC from the exterior. Windows reflect and sometimes distort the image seen through the TIC and by the time that you would see heat indicated through a wall it's usually a well developed fire on the interior. I regularly teach TIC classes in acquired structures with live fire training exercises and can tell you from experience that you will see visible signs of fire and smoke long before you will see it on the TIC. About the only exception to this is on an attic fire.
