Joe, I agree with what your concerns are. I think to know where you want to go you need to know where you have been. All new members should get a class on firefighting history as well as what history and traditions are alive in their own departmen...

My firefighting career started in my hometown in 2001 at Minooka Fire Protection District where I volunteered until 2007. I also worked my way up to a contract FF/Medic for the district.

During my time there I routinely helped with training. I ran the recruit program under the training officer and was in charge of EMS training.

In 2007 I was hired by the City of Joliet as a FF/Medic.

Hello, I just read a response by you in one of the discussions. You talked about your mentoring program. We have one as well. I would be very interested in seeing more of your program so I could compare and maybe improve ours. Would you be willing to share anything? Thanks!!

Althouhg carrying your own tools might be the answer--a better system is where everyone is properly trained on the departments tools--including proper maintenance, putting them back where they belong and understanding their proper use. Imagine the inventory nightmare if each firefighter carried his or her own tools--We all need to understand that our business is about supporting one another, working as a team and getting the job done that provides the best level of service our communities have decided they want. I agree that some of the smaller pocket tools could be firefighter owned--but the FE Tools we need should be department issue and everyone must be responsible for their use.
