Reading your closing discussion remarks, reminded me of a similar experience in the Marines. I proved in Boot Camp that I could shoot Sharpshooter..... I had to prove it every six months after that.

I hold you in the highest respect based on what I've read about you and your responses. I hope to run into you someday and hopefully gather some nuggets from you for my boys. What a job, huh! Its a beautiful thing!
I understand your choice. In our town, its only us, and so there is no politics involved. The politicians are invited to say anything and generally don't come anyway. We keep it just among the firemen.
The Farthest North FOOLS feel that the ceremony, as simple as it is, must carry on. We have no color guard, only one piper and no fancy fanfare. But today we managed to show our younger firefighters, (many who were only 12 or 13 years old in 2001) how deeply we were impacted by that event. We haven't had a line of duty death here in several years and so this is one of the few ways to let them know what it means to us. People are still stunned to find out that a bunch of Alaskans care so much about things happening so far away. But that is what 9-11 produced for us.
I spent some time with my company this morning, sharing your perspective (without name) and encouraged them to follow suit if they couldn't come or didn't want to be there. And your right, it should be 343 - All 365. I really don't think there is a day that goes by that 9-11 doesn't cross my mind at least once.
KTF- - Ben
