Generally I revert back to the old reliable irons for most of my forcible entry needs. The panic doors have a number of different ways to gain access to them but the fastest I’ve messed with is a K saw and a framing square. The blade on a normal k...

Joe, I hope I am reading into the demeanors of the new hires a little to much. Maybe its my OCD when it comes to the fire service being my life constantly that makes it seem as if the new guys don’t care. One thing I do know is that it is up to u...

Joe, Thanks for your reply, I’m sure most answers will be remotely close to one another. I’m just trying to see where the majority of volunteer departments are when it comes to fireground operations. Hope all is well brother Stay Safe Dan

Dan, I still love this job as much as I did since I was a kid watching my dad, uncles, and neighbors leave and go on runs. I don't think that the younger people coming don't love the job, it is just that maybe they don't totally understand what i...

It all depends on who is on scene. We usually run a scene with a chief or asst. chief outside, captains as "sector" officers which could either be inside or outside and our lieutenants as interior officers with crew members. We also belong to the ...

Most definitely respect is a two way street! As officers you must earn the respect of your firefighters and fellow officers. If you feel respect should be handed to you then you will never get it. The officer that goes out and roles hose, washes t...

This is a great group idea! I’m glad to see people taking the interest in not only smashing your way into a structure but also steps and tools of the trade on getting yourself out. I hope this group grows and becomes informative to everyone who se...

We use a simple form that has basically what Larry had on his. We have our roster and if you attended you sign your name next to it. It has the description on the back and who did the training and of course the chiefs signature. Also has the start...

I love the job more now than 26 years ago, but we live in a different world today than in years gone by. It up to us to stay focused and passionate for the job everyday. We have more training tools tools available to us now, so as firefighter or b...

Hey Brother:

No matter what, we don't give up trying, eh? The desire is there, the passion is there, but often the fire burns low, ..its up to those of us who see that to keep fanning the flames.

Dan, that's great news, don't be afraid to let them vent if things didn't go well, or suggest better ways to do something, you'll be amazed how they self critique, and grow as a team... Sounds like you're on the right track I'm glad things are going well. GOOD JOB Capt!

Bio:
I am a volunteer captain for the Bladensburg Fire Department and have been a member since 2000. I began my life in the fire service at a young age as a giant thorn in my dad's butt around the firehouse. In 2000 I joined the Department as a junior member, and in 2005 I was more than ecstatic to be brought on by the fire board as a full fledged member. The fall after graduating high school I proceeded to attend Hocking College where I received my FFII, and EMT-B certifications along with numerous college courses. After my short stay at college I was privileged to be given a job at the Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District as a part time firefighter/emt. After approximately one year of employment with the EKCJFD I applied for the Fredericktown Community Emergency Ambulance District where I also still work. The experience I have obtained from these departments over the past few years has allowed me to move through the ranks of my volunteer department very quickly. As of February of 2008 a was promoted to Lieutenant, soon followed by my promotion to Captain of station two this past January 1. Tentative future plans include, but aren't limited to, Paramedic Certification, Fire Science degree, and an associates degree in business. Later in my career I would be honored to travel as a speaker to teach and mentor young firefighters on the road ahead of them, and teach them the long lost art of brotherhood, pride, and the pure undeniable love for the job.

My personal definition of a firefighter: Someone who will risk it all to save a life, whether it is the life of a total stranger or the life of a fellow brother who has been put in harms way. A firefighter is a person with the ability to perform and succeed as an ordinary person placed in extra ordinary positions. A firefighter is a person that can walk into his station and put aside any wrong doings from any of the firefighters in those four walls because those people are his BROTHERS, and no matter what has been done in the past to hurt or tear it apart, it can be pushed aside because family will always be family despite the occasional efforts to avoid the unavoidable. A firefighter is one of a depleting few that will do the job he’s called to do, with an angel watching over his right shoulder and a captain over his left he will face the unstoppable, and stop it.
