To Trevor,
The override you are talking about can be performed, by taking it out of auto mode and putting it into manual. From there you can use the switch but this override is usually located down in the pedestal. Becareful with this procedure because if you do not return the bucket back to auto mode and try to stow it, you could end up causing damage to the rear of the truck because the angle is off.

Our company is getting a new Tower.  2010 Sutphen, 100' mid mount.  The cool thing about it is apparently, the members in the bucket will be able to override the auto leveling device, and angle the bucket (to a degree) to better work out of it.  This will make working out of the bucket on a pitched roof a lot easier (as well as other applications).

This technique is still taught in the IFSTA manuals and in some state firefighter certification exams as the proper way to ladder a building for both ventilation and firefighter entry; but I believe this is an older practice that needs to be done away with.  Placing the ladder tip even with the base of the window sill still allows the firefighter to perform horizontal ventilation, and places the ladder in a position for it's most important functions, which are firefighter access and egress.  This is an example of where recognized traning materials need to catch up with current fireground practice.

I would agree this is kind of odd, but I have seen this done but there is a final move that would be completed to make it useable for entry into the window.

We have discussed in order to maintain control of the ladder and any occupant that is presenting from the window and that we don't run the risk of the occupant trying to get on the ladder and seriously injuring or killing themselves.  We could position the ladder to the side of the window, raise and set your angle, then the last move would be to roll the ladder into the window for final position.

I have seen portable ladders placed near the top of a window on the windward side for the purpose of breaking the glass for ventilation, but not for ingress/egress.

Question for some of the truck guys, what technique calls for laddering a window with the tip of the ladder to the right or left of the top sill? I saw this done with a probie class and it just struck me as odd. It did not look like a safe means of making a window entry. I have seen this done before but only for the purpose of ventilation not entry.
