As a politically retired Captain of 35 yrs I feel your pain. The answer is that volunteers are not required to maintain any continuing education after passing the fire academy. As a heavy debated issue for many years and I hate to say this, until the division of fire safety steps in and requires it, the class rooms will not be full. The taxpayers, local and state GOV. are finally finding out how much and where money is being spent and it will soon be gone! Then the firefighters and their commisoners will stand up and call foul and say they can not afford the cost of training (free training?). The common answer is we are volunteers or we don't have the time. BUT, there was always time to sit at the fancy bar at the FD and watch the game, have a few beers and respond to calls. The real answer is within the individual FF and "his" desire to be a well trained firefighter. EMT's are required to maintain CEU's (48 in 3yrs in NJ and changing to 5yrs) but still makes you atain a higher element of knowledge. We are our own worst enemy, been like that for many many years.
STAW SAFE !!! Dennis
