Plunger/funnel theory 101:

Contrary to popular belief, the insgina on a fire officer's badge is not a speaking trumpet, aka the "bugle". It is actually a plunger that converts to a funnel.

A Lieutenant has one "plunger", because he deals with company level crap. While going for promotion to Captain, it becomes a funnel for the information rquired for promotion.

Captains have 2 plungers, for they deal with their own company's crap as well as the stuff LT's can't handle. You have to know "more stuff" to become a Deputy, henceforth you need two funnels.

Becoming a Deputy Chief tuerns the plungers into gold. Once again, you deal with Deputy Level issues and the crap that the Captains and Lts can't handle.. and you have to cram more information (some of it having nothing to do with the job) into your head for promotion.

Assistant Chiefs have 4 plungers, Chiefs have 5 for the same reasons.
