Where firefighters come to talk training
Exterior Member identification
Got a quick question, we are an Ohio department that has a minimum firefighter level one for our members. When we went to this we grandfathered members that where volunteer certified to remain on the department. We are preparing to make it so those members are only allowed to do exterior operations however we need a form to identify them so they are not confused when on the scene of not only our dept. but mutual departments incidents. Does anyone have a standard identification that they use for anything of this nature that is simple and cheap? Helmets are somewhat to expensive for our department and unneeded cost but might have to be the route. I would greatly appreciate any ideas.

We Identifty our Exterior Firefighters two ways
Accountilbilty Tag - they carry 2 Yellow for Truck Assignment , Red for Exterior Status
Orange/ Red Stickers on their Helmet and A 'E" on the back of their Helmet E= Exterior

I know in Stratford, CT, they use BLUE helmets to identify members who can not go interior..

I think we are most likely leaning towards an outwards sticker on the members helmets to help identify them. The helmets are what I was thinking at first but one, our EMS wears blue and two the cost is undo for our little department with an even smaller budget! Thank you both for your suggestions though, greatly appreciated!

You can also try vests. In my first volunteer dept Fire Explorers (essentially the same as exterior members) had to wear a blue vest with identification on it if they were operating on the fire ground.
