Where firefighters come to talk training

Firefighter accountability has, for some time now, become the utmost concern in many departments; paid and volunteer. As I speak to firefighters and officers from many departments I notice that each has an accountability system, but the most common remark is that it is often not practiced at each scene. I open this forum to discuss different accountability techniques, proceedures and feedback on the success of each. Each of us should adhere to our department's accountability system, recommend change if the policy has holes in it, and instruct those who are not following this practice that it is imperative that every brother and sister goes home after that call; everyone!

Thank you Walt. Your system is very common. With the 3 radios that are grabbed with the SCBA are they positional radios? meaning if I was the nozzle I would grab radio 1 and mask 1. Or do you jut take what's available.

We actually didn't need to upgrade our radios. All of our radios have a digital ID assigned to them. We were able to take those ID's and in simple terms put a name and position to them. Do your Police Officers have a computer or command radio that shows their ID's? Interesting it's the first I heard of PD having an accountability system similar to this. Would be great.

The radio's are not assigned to positions, just there for the guys to grab as needed.

The PD ID's are not for accountability as much as they are for tracking at dispatch in regards to who calls dispatch.  If you look at the computer log at dispatch you see the time that each one keyed their mic.  I'm pretty sure the actual dispatcher sees more than that.  This is an assumption but it could also tie into a "officer in distress" type system.  The cruisers, like our trucks, have GPS that lets dispatch know our physical location.  I'll have to ask more on this when I get a chance.

Thanks,

Walt
