Where firefighters come to talk training

The International Code Council is looking to require fire sprinkler systems in new construction for one- and two-family dwellings.

How many departments have such residential fire sprinkler systems within their jurisdiction? If so, is this a mandatory ordinance? Where is the benefit from this, the citizen, FD, builder, or insurance company? Does your community see a resistance to the change for better fire protection services provided for these one- and two-family dwelling?

In the county I live in, the political leadership does nothing that requires consulting the fire departments. There are no government run departments in my county. Each of the 6 departments is an independent non-profit company, contracted to cover a certain amount of the county. There is a single paragraph of ordinances in the county that has anything to do with fire protection, and that took 6 months of work on my part ot get included in the ordinance. That paragraph deals with fire hydrants. The Planning Commission is made up entirely by general contractors that have absolute disdain for anything fire protection related, because they see fire ordinances as restrictive to their ability to earn a living. That includes one member of the Planning Commission who is also chief of one of the 6 departments. when he is at the meetings, he represents his own personal interests, rather than interject a fire opinion when needed. He was one of the most vocal voices against sprinkler and hydrant ordinances. However, I am working quietly with the general contractors working on subdivisions in my district about sprinklers, hydrants, and other things needed for adequate fire protection. So far my efforts have met with some success, namely in the fact they are willing to listen. It is an uphill battle, but I feel it is well worth the effort.
