Thanks so much for the guidance. I will pass this info on to my son. One other thing it was also suggested that he become a volunteer firefighter, what do you think about that? Also does it matter where you get your training? We live outside of St. Louis Missouri.
EMT-B is a great start, if he does well and really enjoys it continueing on for hie EMT-P is a huge advantange when it comes time to apply for career jobs, although it is a big commitment and takes time. If he just graduated from HS he has some time to get a few courses done at a local community college since many career departments wont hire until they turn 21 or are 21 by start date. as mentioned above volunteering helps a bit as do combo departments. some classes that help but not limited to are: FF1 and FF2 EMT-B and above, HAZ MAT ops. these are basic classes that most departments give you a year to complete once hired if you don't already have them. A fire science degree is Okay but just a few of the classes are all you really "need" save the money and get the medic before Fire science its a better pay out in th end. You wont make a lot more with teh EMT-P but you will trump amany that only have the EMT B Other advice. BE POLITE, BE POLITE, BE POLITE to ALL FF he meets. We all know each other in some way or another and talk often, when it comes to new hires back ground checks are HUGE! they will check credit reports, Criminal records, driving records and many personal phone calls to previous employers and references. Do ride alongs where available, speak when spoken to, ask how they would like you to dress or what to bring, ie food, money for meals, thank them with a note. Helps to keep his nose VERY CLEAN and his head high. Best of Luck to him. I remember my first day, I called home and said mom, dad I have the best job ever!
