Fire Engineering Training Community

Where firefighters come to talk training

After a few years in this service and watching many other who started in this the same way I did begin to lose the luster for the job it got me wondering, what is it that keeps that beast within us? We who are the 20% that still care, that have that feeling of awesomeness when the alarm drops and says those magic words, “REPORTED DWELLING FIRE, RECEIVED MULTIPLE CALLS”. I know to... this day and throughout my career that I will be proud and excited and prepared to release that beast from within that sits in his cage and quietly waits for those magic words to cut his chains and allow him into the public!
With safety in mind and always priority #1, what about this job do you love? Is it the fact that we might get to stand outside and spray water from the street? How about not going inside to do a primary because the building is “vacant”? Yeah that’s what I thought, its the mad rush of adrenaline, the busting a** and getting it done and the release of this beast. That is what keeps men in the job for many years past retirement, that draw mere mortals in to become firemen! This job is the best, most badass job in the world and you’ve got to prove it each and every time you hit the street. Be the best at this job and go in there and get some. Remember that when some of us took this oath we understood that we put OUR lives on the line so others could live and live well. Though I am a proponent of firefighter safety, due to the fact that I am one, we must remember we must put the community first and we come second. Though many will disagree with this I will serve up no apology for this is how I feel and nothing will change that.
Remember to hit this enemy of fire quick and hard, don’t be defeated and don’t stop until the job is done. This is not a factory, this is not a doctors office, this is a battle for the strong, this is firefighting! Be the best firefighter you’ve ever met, always strive to win each battle you go to, and BE disappointed when you lose, it only drives you to want it more the next time. There is no room for defeat here ladies and gentlemen, for this is the biggest fight of you lives!
