Where firefighters come to talk training

Here are some interesting comments from the engineering community as a result of the release of the NIST report on WTC 7. Pay particular attention to their comments on "their" responsibility as design engineeers.

A source quoted in this article stated that the NIST recommendations are “not needed, dangerously vague, too broad, overly reactive, based on a rare event, or formed from opinion rather than science….It would be unreasonable and unnecessary to apply the recommendation across the board.”

Historically, building codes and fire codes have been the result of a community’s discussion of the need for the safety of the public and of the individual, balanced against what the community and individuals can afford.

At this time, we are beginning two new discussions: whether extreme events need to be included in the “worst-case design” required by performance-based building and fire codes; and the point beyond which the protection of real estate assets is not required by the public safety (is it enough that the building stands long enough for the occupants to evacuate?).

The fire service needs to be actively involved in these discussions. We cannot afford to simply watch the debate, and voice our opinions only when a proposal comes to a vote.
