Tyler.

We allow our explorers to basically do everything we do with the exception of using power tools and being involved in live fire evolutions. They get to throw ladders, SCBA, search & rescue etc. The explorers are allowed to come to our fire training on Tuesday nights year round and Friday mornings during the summer time. If we get a run we will take one or two with us and they stay in the command vehicle with the IC. The other thing that is nice is we have permission from the school district to give them community service hours toward graduation. The school district requires all students to have 40 hours of communitty service before graduation so this is a plus for them.

Search and rescue on an actual run? Or training? Im and explorer at Carmel Fire Dept. and we are allowed to ride all the truck that have available seats. I personally got to throw water on a small wood fire and we can give secondary care to patients of EMS runs, we took our First Responder class allowing us to do so. But basically on any fire runs where our company does not go in, we stick with our Engineer. And if our company is first due and goes in then we report to IC. But other than that we listen to ouor company officer. It's a good time and i love everything about it. Thanks for the reply.

This is all in training. They can go on runs if it is during a training evolution and then they stay with command.

Tyler,

At the station we participate in amost every possible duty. We clean, help cook, take care of apparatus, maintain equipment and train, we train like our lives depend on it, 'cause it does. On ride-alongs, we do a lot. After getting certified we start to ride-along.
We are not allowed to enter IDLH's (Immediatly Dangerous to Life and Health). IDLH's are inside of a buring building, hazmat incedents, front lines of large brushfires etc...But we help out in everything else! We man defensive handlines and wagon batteries on fires, we help with basic EMS and patient care, traffic control and crowd control, and lots more.

boy things have changed alot in 20 yrs, we were not allowed to do much of any thing when i was in sure we smoked up one of the fire halls and did search and rescue drills, but we couldnt ride to calls on any truck, if we did it was as a civilian and not as part of the fire dept.
we couldnt even help clean up after a call

but we could play waterball
