What are your top 5 books that every firefighter should read and understand?

Fire Officer's Handbook of Tactics (Norman)
Brannigan's Building Const (Not the new version though. I am sorry to say that after reading that book, I was more than a little disappointed. The older Brannigans are much better, in my humble opinion)
High Rise Ops (McGrail)

All your books above are a must have for any dedicated firefighter or officer. I do agree that the 4th ed of brannigan's building construction is a little disappointing. You should add one more excellent book to your list and it should always be a must read and go to book when you need an answer. Fireground Strategies by Deputy Chief Anthony Avillo. He just came out with the second edition. The study guide that accompanies the first edition is also a valuable asset.

I was able to take Chief Avillo's class when he came to Seattle. It rocked. An excellent book choice!

Somewhat old but not out of date are FIRE FIGHTING / PRINCIPLES & PRACTICES by William E. Clark and HIGH RISE / FIRE & LIFE SAFETY by John T. O'Hagan. Two others that would give a much broader understanding and insight, especially as far as seeing how the job is done in Europe are FOG ATTACK and EURO FIREFIGHTER both by Paul Grimwood, retired officer of the London, UK fire brigade.
